Handmade along the Highway…the Lincoln Highway and the National Road
In 2006, the Pennsylvania Cultural and Heritage Tourism Office introduced the Pennsylvania Artisan Trail along several routes in the Commonwealth. The purpose of the Artisan Trail is to link/connect old world artisans, unique lodging partners (B&Bs), and the marketplace. The historic Lincoln Highway (Route 30) and National Road (Route 40) were two of the selected routes. The Artisan Trail along these two Corridors is known as Handmade along the Highway. Watch for the above logo at participating gift shops, including the LHHC office at 114 S. Market Street, Ligonier, PA; and the National Road office at 65 West Main Street, Uniontown, PA. To locate other marketplace venues, click on Find the Art.
Participating artisans were juried into the project, and their work in ceramics, woodworking, glassblowing, quilting, basket-weaving, blacksmith/ironwork, and textiles is absolutely amazing and all one-of-a-kind.
To experience a specific craft firsthand (by either observing or hands-on), consider participating in either a one-day or weekend getaway to one of the lovely B&Bs along the Corridor that will be hosting artisans. To discover which package suits your schedule, click on Experience the Art.
Partners for this initiative are the PA Cultural and Heritage Tourism Office, Laurel Highlands Visitors Bureau, Westmoreland County Tourism, Laurel Arts of Somerset County, Fulton County Visitors Bureau, Franklin County Visitors Bureau, Adams County Arts Council, Southwestern PA Heritage Preservation Commission, and the Community Foundation of Fayette County.
